Windows XP support is ending April 8, 2014

Windows XP support is ending April 8, 2014

Microsoft First released Windows XP on October 25,2001 and after over twelve years of supporting the operating system announced it is ending Windows XP support April 8, 2014 which means that they will no longer be providing any updates, patches, or further software security related support.

If you are still running Windows XP it will continue to work after this date, but if a security vulnerability is discovered after this date it will not be fixed by Microsoft. However, Microsoft has indicated it will continue to offer anti-malware support (MSE) for Windows XP until July 14, 2015 and other anti-virus manufacturers have also announced that they'll be extending their support of Windows XP for up to a year. While this will offer some protection for your computer it still will not protect against any new vulnerabilities not yet released or discovered.

Some people argue that since Windows XP is such an established operating system that it is not likely that any new security vulnerabilities will be discovered. However, most experts recommend upgrading to a later version of Windows, either Windows 7 or the latest version of Windows, Windows 8.

If your computer is over four years old or does not meet the system requirements of a new versions of Windows we suggest getting a new computer with a more up-to-date version of Windows. Alternatively if you want to keep the older computer and don't need Windows you may also consider switching to Linux distro.

Tip: Microsoft is offering a free data transfer program for users upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.

Tip: If your hesitation of going to a new version of Windows is because you have an older program that is designed for Windows XP,Windows XP Mode can help older programs run in new versions of Windows.

What if I still want to run and use Windows XP?

If you plan on continuing to use Microsoft Windows XP after April 8, 2014 following the below suggestions.

Don't use an administrator account - Use a limited account and not a admin account. If you use an account with not enough rights spyware, malware, and other exploits wont work or be much less likely to work.

Use an alternative browser - Don't use Internet Explorer and instead use an alternative browser such as Chrome or Firefox, which will continue to be updated and remain secure.

Keep your browser plugins and extensions updated - Plug-ins like Java and Flash are one of the most common methods of attacking a computer. Keep your browser and all of its plug-ins up-to-date. You can find the latest version of all your plug-ins through our system information tool. If you don't use a plug-in that is installed (e.g. Java, uninstall it from the computer.)

Keep the computer offline - If this is a work computer that doesn't need to be online keep it offline. Without having access to the Internet the computer cannot be attacked.

Follow all the steps on how to protect yourself while online.

Virtual keyboard Technology

virtual keyboard is made of infrared laser light. As a result the keyboard can be projected onto any flat surface. A separate infrared sensor tracks the keys as they are tapped. A virtual keyboard is created using both visible and invisible light. The visible light is used to project the keyboard on to a surface, and invisible infrared light is used to track the keystrokes.

How a virtual keyboard works:

1. A Laser projects a visible virtual keyboard onto a level surface.

2. Invisible infrared beam is projected above virtual keyboard.

3. The finger makes keystroke of the virtual keyboard. This breaks the infrared beam and infrared light is reflected back to the projector.

4. Reflected infrared beam passes through an infrared filter for the camera.

5. The camera photographs angle of incoming infrared light.

6. The sensor chip determines where the infrared beam was broken and translates it into co-ordinates and characters are created on screen.

A virtual keyboard is a small projector transmits an image of a keyboard layout on any level surface, like tables etc. A sensor inside the projector captures keystrokes, converting them into on-screen characters. To create the illusion of a real keyboard, the projector makes a clicking sound when a keystroke is made.

Google's Doctor

If you're searching Google for information on a health issue, you may see a window pop up that invites you to have a video chat with an expert -- for free. Google is testing a system for linking searchers to healthcare professionals offering consults through its Helpouts service. Normally, there's a fee attached, but Google is picking up the tab during its search feature trial period.

Google is offering a limited trial of a feature that offers people conducting searches of medical terms the opportunity to engage in a video chat with a health professional via its Helpouts service. Helpouts, which launched last November, connects users with experts in a variety of fields such as Art & Music, Fitness & Nutrition, and Health.

The experts typically charge a fee for their service, but Google will cover all fees for users who engage with a health professional via the new search feature during its test period.

The new feature initially was reported on Reddit. Google subsequently confirmed the tests were taking place.

"When you're searching for basic health information -- from conditions like insomnia or food poisoning -- our goal is to provide you with the most helpful information available," Google spokesperson Liz Markman told the E-Commerce Times. "We're trying this new feature to see if it's useful to people."
Take 2 Pills and Chat in the Morning

Google Helpouts has not attracted widespread media attention, but it currently has more than 420,000 followers.

"This is really just leveraging social networking for the purposes of medical assistance, but it is an important step to providing 24/7 access to medical providers, and it could provide access to doctors anywhere in the world, eventually," said Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research.

"This could change the face of healthcare," he told the E-Commerce Times.

"There are so many aspects of healthcare that need to be improved, including the use of big data for analysis and feedback, the use of mobile solutions for real-time diagnosis, and low-cost services on a global basis," McGregor said. "This could be the first step to implementing a platform that can address all these issues and provide real accountability."
Remote Care

Advice provided through the Helpouts service would be limited by its very nature.

"The doctor is not there is person and is limited to the information the patient provides. So, the diagnosis may be limited and has the potential to be inaccurate," McGregor noted.

"However, for many cases, this could save consumer and the insurance industry time and money, especially if you can leverage doctors in other regions," he suggested. "As mobile tools advance -- such as though the tricorder X-prize sponsored by Qualcomm -- these tools, in conjunction with easy access to doctors, could change the face of healthcare."

Though a Helpouts chat won't replace a visit to the doctor, it could help determine if a follow-up office visit is necessary, or if a medical issue has the potential to be serious.

"Google's new Helpouts chats with doctors is meant to address one of healthcare's most pressing problems: determining if or when a patient should schedule time for an actual office visit," said Charles King, principal analyst atPund-IT.

"At this point, the issue is handled in a piecemeal fashion with everything from online FAQ lists for specific ailments to calling centers where medical assistants answer basic questions and refer patients for follow-up calls with nurse practitioners or doctors," he told the E-Commerce Times.

"The primary benefit of Google's solution appears to be the promise of simplifying and streamlining this process by providing patients ready, secure access to actual MDs," King pointed out. "That could, and should, help patients make quicker, more accurate decisions about follow-up care."

Nokia N1 Tablet

Nokia on Tuesday announced the N1 Android tablet, the first offering under its own brand since Microsoft's acquisition of its mobile phone business.

The N1, slated for Q1 2015 release in China, will be made by Foxconn, which also will handle sales and distribution.

"There are two Nokias now, the cellphone unit, which Microsoft bought, and the networking unit, which this [N1] announcement seems to have come out of," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

Microsoft is migrating away from the Nokia name, having just brought out the Microsoft Lumia 535, the first Lumia associated with its own name, and "my understanding is that [it] won't be releasing any more Nokia-branded tablets," Enderle told the E-Commerce Times.

The Lumia 2520 may not have sold well in China, where prices are "far lower" on the average, Enderle pointed out, so "these are very different products at very different prices, and I wouldn't expect to see the 2520 in the market any more when the N1 is launched."

Under the N1's Hood

The N1 has a one-piece aluminum body with a sandblasted soft finish. It has a 2.4 GHz 64-bit Intel Atom quad-core processor and runs Android Lollipop.

The 7.9-inch Gorilla Glass 3 display has an IPS panel with LED backlighting and 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. It is fully laminated.

The N1 has an 8-MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and a 5-MP front-facing fixed-focus camera. It can record 1080p HD video.

It has a micro-USB 2.0 port with a Type C reversible connector, two 0.5 W stereo speakers, and a 6-axis combination gyroscope and accelerometer. It supports WiFi and Bluetooth.

The N1 also has the Nokia Z Launcher, a home screen that lets users scribble a letter with their finger to find what they want. This adapts to the user's location and actions and appears to be self-learning.

Some media reports have likened the N1's design to that of the iPad mini, which is "not surprising ... since there are few available design parameters that consumers find acceptable, and the iPad mini has proven to be acceptable," said Wally Swain, a senior vice president at451 Research.

5G network change the world.

100 times faster
5G will also run faster, a lot faster.
Prof Tafazolli now believes it is possible to run a wireless data connection at an astounding 800Gbps - that's 100 times faster than current 5G testing.
When Samsung announced in 2013 it was testing 5G at 1Gbps, journalists excitedly reported that a high-definition movie could be downloaded in less than half a minute.
A speed of 800Gbps would equate to downloading 33 HD films - in a single second.

Google hires camel

It's given us robot cars and internet-enabled glasses -- but when it came to creating a "Street View" of a desert, Google hit on a low-tech solution.
It hired a camel.
The beast has become the first animal to carry Google's Trekker camera, which is typically hoisted by humans to capture 360-degree images of destinations inaccessible to its Street View cars.
Google spokeswoman Monica Baz says the camel, reportedly named Raffia, was an apt way of documenting the beautiful shifting sands of Abu Dhabi's Liwa Oasis.

Hackers hit bank

NEW YORK (AP) Hackers stole personal information from millions of JPMorgan Chase customers this summer, in one of the biggest breaches of a financial company.

The bank says only non-financial data was taken names, addresses, telephone numbers and email. But that s still a lot of personal detail, and experts warn that customers need to be vigilant about identity theft in the next several months.

The theft involving 76 million households and seven million small businesses raises questions about the safety of personal information, especially at banks.
What risks do people face? Will this keep happening? And can bank customers reduce the threat of identity or financial theft?

Q: How concerned should I be if the hackers didn t get Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card information?

A: We may not yet know the full scope of what the hackers were able to steal, says Eric Chiu, president of HyTrust, a cloud security company based in Mountain View, Ca. "They can sit on your network for months, siphoning off data before being detected," says Chiu. He says that customers  addresses and phone numbers could be used or sold to others who might combine that information with other stolen data. It could then be used to access accounts or even to open new accounts in the unwitting customers  names.
Even if the information isn t used for phishing schemes or direct fraud, it could be sold on the gray market to people who might want to send spam or sales pitches to bank customers. "There s a good market for that kind of data," says Adam Kujawa, head of malware intelligence at Malwarebytes, a San Jose, California company that makes security software.

Q: How close did the hackers get to stealing customers  money or more sensitive financial data?

A: We don t really know. The hackers may not have been looking to siphon funds, says Chiu, because "data is what s gold now." Other security experts say the bank s public statements suggest that its defenses were partly successful, because hackers weren t able to get other information.

Q: So is this a partial win for the bank?
A: It might be, says Mike Lloyd, chief technology officer at Sunnyvale, Ca.-based RedSeal Networks. But the bank shouldn t declare victory
cybersecurity is "a never-ending war" against new and evolving threats.

Q: What else could happen?

A: One concern is that this breach was a reconnaissance mission in preparation for a bigger hack, says Craig Carpenter, chief strategist at AccessData, a cybersecurity firm. "They don t have to crack the entire system tomorrow," he says. "They could have simply been mining for data, or looking to leave something behind that would allow them to get into (JPMorgan s servers) easier next time."

Q: What else should banks do to protect customer data?

A: The financial industry is already doing more than other industries, says Dwayne Melancon, chief technology officer for the cybersecurity firm Tripwire, in Portland, Oregon. Chase in particular is known for using advanced security technology, says Avivah Litan, an analyst with Gartner, a technology research firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. But she also says that most companies have trouble keeping up with constant threats, and one big vulnerability lies with employees. While businesses tend to spend more on defending against outside attacks, many hacks begin with a compromised employee account. Litan says companies must do more to screen workers and also train them in security precautions.

Q: Should I close my account at JPMorgan?

A: At this point, there s no indication that s necessary. Steve Weisman, a Boston attorney and author of several books and articles about identity theft, says "it won t do any good" because other banks may be equally vulnerable to hacking. "There s no place to run and hide. You should monitor your account regularly and don t trust any communications you receive."

Q: After big attacks against retail chains and now Chase, should we expect more breaches?

A: The size and scope of the breaches are going to get worse, not better. Target, Home Depot and JPMorgan Chase are just the beginning, says Darren Hayes, a professor and expert in cybersecurity at Pace University in New York. It s safe to presume that hackers have been sitting inside these banks and business networks for months, even years, sometimes not doing anything. "Hackers these days are patient ... and are extremely effective at just gathering a lot of data over time."

Q: Is there any way to protect myself if they re this sophisticated?

A: Change your passwords regularly, don t click on links in suspicious emails (they could be phishing attempts by scammers), and regularly check online statements for any charges you don t recognize. Be wary of calls requesting personal information.

Q: How bad is the fallout so far?

A: The New York-based bank says there s no evidence of financial fraud associated with the breach.

Microsoft Windows 10

SAN FRANCISCOSept. 30, 2014 Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday unveiled its next Windows operating system, Windows 10, and gave a first look at an early technical preview for the PC available Oct. 1. The announcement highlighted advancements designed for business, including an updated user experience and enhanced security and management capabilities. The company also introduced the Windows Insider Program, kicking off its largest-ever open collaborative development effort to change the way Windows is built and delivered to best meet the needs of customers. Program participants will receive the technical preview of Windows 10 and a steady stream of builds through the development cycle to use and give feedback on.

“Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows, unlocking new experiences to give customers new ways to work, play and connect,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft. “This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead.”

Technical preview PC productivity
The early technical preview of Windows 10 demonstrates new levels of flexibility, navigation and familiarity through the Windows experience. Features include these:
  • Expanded Start menu. The familiar Start menu is back, providing quick one-click access to the functions and files that people use most, and it includes a new space to personalize with favorite apps, programs, people and websites.
  • Apps that run in a window. Apps from the Windows Store now open in the same format that desktop programs do. They can be resized and moved around, and have title bars at the top allowing users to maximize, minimize and close with a click.
  • Snap enhancements. Working in multiple apps at once is easier and more intuitive with snap improvements. A new quadrant layout allows up to four apps to be snapped on the same screen. Windows will also show other apps and programs running for additional snapping, and it will even make smart suggestions on filling available screen space with other open apps.
  • New Task view button. The new Task view button on the task bar enables one view for all open apps and files, allowing for quick switching and one-touch access to any desktop created.
  • Multiple desktops. Instead of too many apps and files overlapping on a single desktop, it’s easy to create and switch between distinct desktops for different purposes and projects — whether for work or personal use.

Microsoft launch Xbox One in China

Microsoft has launched the Xbox One in China - becoming the first major console maker to enter what could be a massively lucrative market.
The first consoles were sold in Shanghai, priced at 4,299 yuan ($699, £430). Sony and Nintendo are yet to launch their respective products.
In January, the Chinese government lifted a 14-year ban on consoles, made because of worries over content.
However, many popular titles, such as Call of Duty, will still be banned.
Only 10 games were available to buy on the Xbox One's release - but Microsoft has said 70 titles are in the pipeline.
Beating its rivals to the market may give Microsoft a much-needed sales boost. Its console is currently being outsold by Sony's PlayStation 4 in all major markets.
